Jonesport Historical Society

21 Sawyer Square, Jonesport

On the busy and productive working waterfront of Moosabec Reach, the Jonesport Historical Society preserves artifacts in the historic Sawyer Building of one of Maine’s important fishing ports. It also houses the “Jonesport Heritage Center,” an expansive computer database of local history containing a rich archive: 13,000 photos; 25,000 pages of newspaper articles, documents and texts; 400 video clips; genealogical information on more than 82,000 individuals; and extensive cemetery data on 4,300 graves. For discerning visitors and researchers, volunteers are willing to help with creative ways to explore working waterfront sites, and connect with the active fishing community.

The Downeast Fisheries Trail consists of 45 locations from Penobscot Bay, Maine, to Passamaquoddy Bay, New Brunswick, that showcase active and historic fisheries heritage sites, such as fish hatcheries, aquaculture facilities, fishing harbors, clam flats, processing plants, historical societies, community centers, parks, and other related places. The Trail is an effort to raise awareness among residents and visitors of the importance of the region’s maritime heritage and the role of marine resources to the area’s economy.
